Nick Sirianni Defends Eagles’ Decision to Play Saquon Barkley After Hamstring Setback

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni defended the team’s decision to play Saquon Barkley against the Dallas Cowboys, explaining that the running back was monitored closely after returning from a hamstring injury. However, Barkley aggravated the injury on his first carry and later exited the game with a reported back injury, raising fresh questions about his availability and the Eagles’ plans for the veteran running back.

Nick Sirianni Defends Eagles’ Decision to Play Saquon Barkley After Hamstring Setback

Barkley initially injured his hamstring on his first carry during Philadelphia’s Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. After missing the next two games, he returned for Week 7 against Dallas, 22 days after sustaining the original injury.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, his comeback did not go as planned.

Sirianni Says Barkley’s Health Was the Priority

Following Philadelphia’s loss to Dallas, Sirianni was asked whether Barkley was ready to return to action after his extended absence.

The coach said the team limited Barkley’s workload and maintained regular communication with him throughout the game to monitor his condition.

“Obviously, you saw that he was on a pitch count out there today,” Sirianni told reporters. “There was constant communication to see how he was feeling, see where he was, and obviously, he came out early in the second half.”

Sirianni emphasized that the organization considered Barkley’s health the most important factor in deciding whether he could play.

“Again, when you go into something like that, you make sure that the player’s health is first and foremost. Is he ready to go? Do they feel ready to go? Do the doctors and trainers feel like they’re ready to go? We felt like that was the case today, but obviously wanted to keep a close eye on him,” he said.

The coach also praised Barkley’s determination to return and contribute to his teammates, noting that the running back would have preferred to remain on the field regardless of the circumstances.

“He’s tough as heck,” Sirianni said. “He wanted to be out there for his teammates, probably had to slow him [down] as far as -- he’d be out there every play because of the person he is and the teammate he is and the player he is and the toughness that he has.”

Sirianni added that Philadelphia attempted to manage Barkley’s participation carefully while welcoming his playmaking ability back to the lineup.

“So, we tried to be smart with him there, but it was good to have him back out there,” Sirianni said. “He obviously had a nice game and was very productive when he touched the football.”

Barkley Adjusted His Approach After His First Carry

Barkley’s initial carry against Dallas proved particularly significant. Given his reputation for explosive runs and breaking away from defenders, the play offered a glimpse of how his lingering hamstring issue might affect his performance.

Sirianni acknowledged that Barkley appeared to exercise more caution than usual rather than immediately pushing himself to full speed.

“He obviously got out of there on that and did a good job of protecting himself,” the coach said.

Sirianni suggested that a fully healthy Barkley might normally have turned the same opportunity into a more explosive play.

“I think that’s a play that, normally with Saquon, you see him break out of that and it’s hard to catch him in those situations,” he explained.

The Eagles also reduced Barkley’s playing time beyond what the coaching staff had initially anticipated.

“Obviously, I think he probably played a little less than what we initially thought. He definitely played a little less than what we initially thought,” Sirianni said.

Despite the reduced workload, the coach viewed Barkley’s presence as valuable, both for his ability to make plays and for the confidence his return could provide the offense.

However, Barkley eventually left the contest with an injury described as a back issue, adding another concern to his recovery.

Could Barkley’s Health Affect the Trade Market?

Barkley’s injury situation also creates uncertainty surrounding Philadelphia’s potential options ahead of the NFL trade deadline, which is two weeks away in the scenario described.

His return to the lineup had prompted questions about whether the Eagles wanted to evaluate his condition and on-field value before considering a possible trade. There is no confirmed evidence that Philadelphia played him specifically to facilitate a deal, and Sirianni’s public explanation focused on medical readiness, workload management and Barkley’s desire to help the team.

Nevertheless, the latest setback could complicate any trade discussions if the Eagles were considering moving the running back.

Teams seeking help at the position are likely to prioritize players who can contribute immediately and whose health presents minimal uncertainty. Barkley’s recent hamstring problems, followed by his reported back injury, could make potential buyers more cautious.

The situation could become even more complicated if Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is available. A contender weighing its options would need to consider each player’s health, expected availability and the value required to complete a deal.

For Philadelphia, Barkley’s immediate priority is recovering and determining when he can safely return to full participation. Sirianni’s comments made clear that the coaching staff values the running back’s toughness and impact, but his latest exit leaves questions about how quickly he can get back to his usual level.

The Eagles Face More Questions About Barkley’s Availability

Barkley’s return against Dallas was supposed to provide a boost to Philadelphia’s offense after two missed games. Instead, the hamstring setback and subsequent back issue have created further uncertainty.

Sirianni maintained that the team tried to handle the situation responsibly, with input from Barkley, the medical staff and the coaching staff. But the decision will inevitably attract scrutiny after the running back aggravated his injury on his opening carry.

Philadelphia now faces a difficult balancing act: getting one of its most important offensive players healthy without exposing him to another setback.

Until Barkley’s condition becomes clearer, his playing status and any potential trade implications remain unresolved.
