Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson delivered an unexpected comeback Thursday night, returning to the field after being taken to a hospital with a chest injury during the team's 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Watson, 27, was injured in the first half after making a 53-yard reception from quarterback Jordan Love. He struggled to get up but managed to leave the field before being transported by ambulance to a local hospital at approximately 8:30 p.m., according to ESPN.
Despite the concerning situation, Watson returned to Lambeau Field roughly an hour later and rejoined his teammates.
Watson Reveals What Happened After the Injury
Watson explained after the game that he believed he landed awkwardly on the football or his elbow during the reception.
“I couldn't breathe on the field. I got the wind knocked out of me,” Watson told reporters.
He also said he began spitting up blood after reaching the sideline, prompting medical staff to send him for further examination.
An X-ray revealed a broken rib. Doctors then performed a CT scan and blood tests to check for additional complications.
Those tests reportedly showed no further issues, and Watson made it clear that he wanted to return to the game.
“Before I even left [the hospital], I wanted to go back out there,” he said. “So I was going to make sure I was going to get back out there if they let me.”
Cameras Capture Watson's Return to Lambeau Field
Watson rejoined the Packers in the third quarter, with Prime Video cameras capturing his arrival as he stepped out of the ambulance.
The wide receiver described the unusual experience as something out of professional wrestling.
“It was super dramatic,” Watson said. “I used to watch WWE as a kid. I felt like I was watching WWE SmackDown vs. Raw or something, seeing the cameras on me when I was coming out of the ambulance.”
While receiving medical attention at the hospital, Watson also kept track of the game by following the play-by-play on a doctor's phone.
His return was followed by a productive finish. Watson caught eight passes on 10 targets for 113 yards, helping Green Bay secure the eight-point victory.
Packers Prepare for Next Game
Watson's performance against Carolina brought his season totals to 708 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
The Packers improved to 5-3 with the win and remain in a competitive NFC North race alongside the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.
Green Bay is scheduled to visit the New England Patriots on Sunday, November 8.
Although Watson's return provided an emotional moment for the Packers, his broken rib remains an important injury to monitor as the team prepares for its next game.
