Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering a Jones fracture in his foot during Friday’s practice, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The injury occurred late in a light practice during a team drill. A team source described it as a fluke accident that did not involve another player stepping on Payne’s foot.
Payne is expected to be placed on injured reserve. A typical recovery from a Jones fracture can take up to four months, although his individual recovery timeline has not been confirmed.
Payne’s Future in Washington Uncertain
The injury comes at a significant moment for Payne, who is in the final year of his contract and turns 30 next May. He is also Washington’s longest-tenured position player, having joined the franchise as a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Commanders signed Payne to a four-year contract extension in March 2023. With his current deal approaching its end, the season-ending injury adds uncertainty to his future with the team.
Washington (1-4-1) faces the Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) on Sunday night and will already be without starting defensive end Javon Kinlaw, who is sidelined with a knee injury.
Commanders Have Options on the Defensive Line
Despite losing Payne, Washington has several experienced players available along the defensive front. Veterans Charles Omenihu and Deatrich Wise Jr. could help absorb some of the workload.
Defensive end Jer’Zhan Newton has also returned to practice after suffering a torn pectoral muscle during a preseason game on Aug. 14. The 2024 second-round pick is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup.
Payne’s absence will nevertheless leave a major gap. He started every game from 2020 through 2024 and opened all six games for Washington this season. He missed just two contests in 2025.
Pro Bowl Season Highlighted Payne’s Impact
Payne earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2022 after recording a career-high 11 sacks, six more than his previous best single-season total.
He has recorded one sack this season, but his pass-rushing production has remained notable. According to TruMedia, Payne averaged a career-best 2.8 pass-rush wins per game.
His season-ending injury is a major setback for a Washington defense already dealing with personnel issues as the team prepares for a divisional matchup against Philadelphia.
