Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy sparked a viral moment during the team's World Series celebrations, delivering a blunt criticism of the New York Yankees while speaking with outfielder Jake Bauers.
The exchange took place Wednesday night after Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 to capture the first World Series championship in franchise history. Video of the conversation quickly circulated online.
Bauers, a former Yankees player, caught the final out of the decisive game at Tropicana Field. During the celebration, he handed Murphy the ball from the championship-clinching play, prompting an unexpectedly pointed response from his manager.
Murphy's Blunt Message to Bauers
Murphy congratulated Bauers on his future prospects before referencing the outfielder's time in New York.
"You're going to be a rich f---er," Murphy told Bauers, who is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason.
He then criticized the Yankees, saying Bauers should remember how differently the Brewers operated compared with his former team.
"Just remember when you were on that horses--- Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself?" Murphy said. "Just remember, say, 'This is the way we used to do it.'"
Neither Murphy nor Bauers addressed the exchange publicly when speaking with reporters after the game.
Yankees Face More Criticism After World Series Losses
Murphy's comments revive criticism of the Yankees that surfaced after their defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.
Several Dodgers veterans, including Joe Kelly, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor, publicly questioned New York's performance during that series.
Kelly described the Yankees as "sloppy" and criticized their inability to make routine plays. Rojas also took aim at what he characterized as lazy defensive effort.
Murphy's remarks echoed those earlier criticisms, although his comments were made during a private-feeling moment of celebration rather than a formal media appearance.
Bauers Revitalizes His Career in Milwaukee
Bauers' journey makes Murphy's comments particularly notable. The outfielder spent part of the 2023 season with the Yankees, appearing in 84 games and batting .202 with 12 home runs and 95 strikeouts across 272 plate appearances.
New York traded him to Milwaukee in November 2023, and the move proved significant for his career.
In 2026, Bauers produced the best offensive season of his career, hitting .266 with 26 home runs, 86 RBIs and an .874 OPS. He delivered another major performance in the postseason, earning National League Championship Series MVP honors after batting .286 with six RBIs as Milwaukee swept the Dodgers in four games.
Bauers then caught the final out of the World Series-clinching victory, helping bring the Brewers their long-awaited first championship.
With free agency approaching, his outstanding season could also strengthen his position in contract negotiations.
For Murphy, the championship celebration offered an opportunity to praise his player's success while making his feelings about Bauers' former team unmistakably clear.
