Dylan Raiola delivered his best passing performance as an Oregon Duck, throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Ducks to a 34-26 comeback victory over No. 20 Northwestern on Saturday in Eugene, Oregon.
Raiola completed 22 of 31 passes in his second consecutive start for Oregon (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten). He stepped into the starting role after Dante Moore was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The Ducks overcame an early 10-0 deficit and a seven-point halftime disadvantage to secure an important conference win.
“I feel like that's the closest we've been to a complete performance,” Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said. “That being said, there's a lot of things we can still do better.”
Raiola and Moore Power Oregon's Comeback
Northwestern (6-2, 3-2) controlled much of the first half, taking a 10-0 lead in the opening quarter and carrying a 20-13 advantage into halftime.
Raiola gave Oregon momentum just before the break, connecting with Dakorien Moore for a 10-yard touchdown with 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The quarterback found Moore again in the fourth quarter, this time for a 75-yard touchdown pass that helped swing the game in Oregon's favor. Moore finished with 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Raiola also connected with Jamari Johnson for a 17-yard scoring pass as the Ducks continued their comeback.
“We weren't gonna go down without swinging, and I think that kind of got lost a little bit,” Raiola said. “I don't think we completely lost it, but we got back to our DNA.”
Freshman Brandon Smith Delivers the Go-Ahead Score
Oregon's rushing attack received a boost from freshman Brandon Smith after running back Jordon Davison left the game with an injury in the first half.
Smith stepped up with 82 rushing yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard run during a fourth-and-goal situation. The score put Oregon ahead 27-23 in the fourth quarter.
Lanning praised Smith's readiness and said the freshman's role could continue to expand.
“That's all you want as a coach, is a guy that is not necessarily begging for their opportunity, but ready when their opportunity comes,” Lanning said. “His role will continue to grow with this team. He's obviously very capable.”
Oregon's Offense Responds to Coaching Change
The Ducks' offensive improvement came after a significant coaching change. Oregon dismissed offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer on Oct. 25 following its loss to Illinois and promoted assistant quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson to oversee play-calling.
With Raiola delivering a clean performance and setting a career high in passing yards at Oregon, the offense produced 15.3 yards per pass attempt. The rushing game averaged 3.8 yards per carry.
Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles also put together a productive performance, completing 22 of 38 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown. He added 93 rushing yards and a touchdown, reaching 10 rushing scores for the season.
However, the Wildcats managed only six points after halftime. Kicker Jackson Kleather converted four of five field-goal attempts but missed late in the fourth quarter.
Lanning credited Oregon's defense for limiting Northwestern's opportunities in the red zone and forcing the Wildcats to settle for field goals.
The victory gives Oregon renewed momentum as it continues its Big Ten campaign, while Raiola's performance provides an encouraging sign following Moore's season-ending injury.
