College football's Week 7 delivered a dramatic shake-up, with five top-10 teams suffering losses and the national championship picture becoming far less predictable.
BYU made one of the biggest statements of the season by defeating Notre Dame 28–24. Kentucky also picked up a significant road win over Oklahoma, while Wake Forest continued to build momentum. Meanwhile, Alabama and Texas suffered damaging defeats that leave them with little room for further mistakes.
The results have intensified the race for the College Football Playoff and raised fresh questions about which teams are genuine championship contenders.
Here are the biggest risers and fallers after Week 7.
College Football Risers After Week 7
BYU: A Statement Win Against Notre Dame
BYU delivered one of the weekend's most impressive performances, defeating then-No. 2 Notre Dame 28–24 in Provo.
The Cougars showed they could compete with an established national contender, even after Notre Dame fought back to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier accounted for four touchdowns, including two rushing scores, a receiving touchdown and the decisive late passing touchdown.
Bachmeier finished with 269 total yards, while BYU's defense made life difficult for Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. The Fighting Irish completed only 55.1% of their passes and struggled to establish consistent offensive control.
BYU's victory was particularly important for the Big 12, which is looking to strengthen its position in the expanded playoff race. With teams such as Texas Tech and Utah also in the conversation, the conference could have multiple opportunities to make a postseason impact.
One win does not guarantee a deep playoff run, but BYU has given the country a compelling reason to take its championship ambitions seriously.
Kentucky: A Road Win That Matters
Kentucky strengthened its playoff credentials by defeating Oklahoma 21–13 in Norman.
The Wildcats entered the game as underdogs but stayed competitive before making decisive plays late in the contest. Their defense intercepted Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer three times, and a late interception return for a touchdown helped secure the victory.
The result offers further evidence that Kentucky's progress under first-year coach Will Stein may be more than an early-season surprise.
At 6–1, the Wildcats have put themselves in a position to compete for a strong postseason finish. Their ability to win away from home could become particularly important as the schedule gets tougher.
Kentucky still needs to maintain its consistency, but beating Oklahoma on the road is the kind of result that can improve a team's standing with playoff selection discussions approaching.
Wake Forest: An ACC Team Gaining Momentum
Wake Forest is another team attracting attention after a productive stretch of football.
Under second-year head coach Jake Dickert and offensive coordinator Rob Ezell, the Demon Deacons have shown the ability to score consistently and put pressure on opposing defenses. Their recent run of convincing wins has helped strengthen their position in the ACC conversation.
Quarterback Gio Lopez has been an important part of that progress. After transferring from North Carolina, he has given the offense a productive option under center and helped the team build momentum.
Wake Forest's earlier loss to Miami showed the gap it may still need to close against the nation's strongest teams. However, its recent performances suggest it should not be overlooked as the conference race develops.
If the Demon Deacons continue winning, their coaching staff could also attract attention during the offseason hiring cycle.
College Football Fallers After Week 7
Alabama: Back-to-Back Losses Raise Concerns
Alabama's season has taken a difficult turn following consecutive defeats against Georgia and Tennessee.
The Crimson Tide fell 26–10 to Tennessee, managing just 10 points while struggling to sustain offensive drives. The Volunteers led throughout the game, scored twice in the second half and kept Alabama off the scoreboard after halftime.
Tennessee also won the battle for field position and turnovers, outgaining Alabama 347–201. Running back DeSean Bishop scored twice in the second half, helping the Volunteers pull away.
For head coach Kalen DeBoer, the immediate challenge is to get Alabama back on track before another loss damages its playoff prospects further.
The Crimson Tide still have opportunities to strengthen their résumé, but consecutive defeats have significantly reduced their margin for error. Quarterback Keelon Russell and the offense will need to respond with greater consistency in the weeks ahead.
Alabama remains a program capable of recovering from a difficult stretch. The question is whether it can make the necessary adjustments quickly enough to stay in the national championship conversation.
Texas: Offensive Struggles Put Playoff Hopes at Risk
Texas is facing mounting pressure after losing consecutive games to Oklahoma and Florida.
The Longhorns suffered a 27–24 home defeat against Florida, adding another disappointing result to a season in which their offense has struggled to find consistent rhythm.
Quarterback Arch Manning has faced scrutiny as the team's offensive problems have continued. Texas invested heavily in strengthening its roster during the offseason, raising expectations that the Longhorns would be among the country's leading championship contenders.
Instead, the recent losses have put those ambitions in jeopardy.
Texas still has a defense capable of keeping it competitive, but defensive strength alone may not be enough to overcome an offense that has struggled to close out games. The Longhorns need improved execution, more reliable quarterback play and better production in key situations.
The road ahead offers opportunities to recover, but another defeat could make the playoff path considerably more difficult.
Notre Dame: A Costly Defeat With Playoff Consequences
Notre Dame's 28–24 loss to BYU was damaging not only because of the opponent but also because of what it could mean for the Fighting Irish's postseason position.
The Irish had opportunities to win in Provo but could not stop BYU's late scoring drive. Their offense showed flashes of quality, yet the overall performance exposed weaknesses that will need attention before the most important games of the season.
The ending also generated controversy. The Big 12 acknowledged that Notre Dame should have had time for one additional play at the end of regulation, while questions were raised about a possible pass-interference penalty on the final sequence.
Those officiating issues will remain part of the discussion, but Notre Dame cannot afford to let them distract from the football problems revealed by the defeat.
The Fighting Irish can still strengthen their playoff résumé with strong performances in their remaining games. A potential matchup with Miami could be especially important, giving Notre Dame an opportunity to demonstrate that it remains capable of beating elite competition.
However, the loss to BYU means the Irish have less room for error than they did before Week 7.
What Week 7 Means for the College Football Playoff
The weekend's results reinforced how quickly the college football landscape can change. Teams that looked like championship favorites a week ago now face difficult questions, while programs outside the traditional spotlight have gained momentum.
BYU has strengthened its case as a legitimate contender. Kentucky has secured a valuable road win, and Wake Forest is building a stronger position in the ACC. Meanwhile, Alabama, Texas and Notre Dame must respond if they want to keep their playoff ambitions alive.
The season is far from over, and one loss does not automatically eliminate a team from contention. But the remaining schedule will carry greater significance for the teams that stumbled in Week 7.
With major matchups still ahead, the next few weeks should help separate the genuine championship contenders from those struggling to keep pace.
