Miami WR Malachi Toney Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Set to Miss Notre Dame Showdown

Miami's unbeaten season has suffered a major setback ahead of its biggest game of the year. Star wide receiver Malachi Toney is set to undergo ankle surgery and is expected to miss multiple weeks, leaving the top-ranked Hurricanes without one of their most important offensive weapons for Saturday's matchup against Notre Dame.

Miami WR Malachi Toney Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Set to Miss Notre Dame Showdown

A Miami team source confirmed the surgery to The Athletic on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The source added that Toney could still return before the end of the regular season.

ESPN initially reported that Toney suffered a high ankle sprain during Wednesday's practice. Miami had hoped the receiver might recover sufficiently to return to practice later in the week and play against the Fighting Irish. However, the decision to proceed with surgery means the Hurricanes must prepare for an extended absence.

Toney's Absence Is a Major Blow to Miami's Offense

Toney has been one of the driving forces behind Miami's unbeaten start and its nation's-leading offense.

Through eight games, the standout receiver has recorded 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has already exceeded his touchdown total from last season, when he established a school record with 109 catches and helped Miami reach the national championship game.

His production has made him a central figure in Miami's offense and a key target for quarterback Darian Mensah.

The Hurricanes entered the week at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in ACC play. They debuted at No. 1 in Tuesday's College Football Playoff rankings, adding further significance to the upcoming stretch of their schedule.

Notre Dame Game Becomes Even More Challenging

Miami travels to face No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday before finishing the regular season with three consecutive home games against Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

Although a loss to Notre Dame would not affect Miami's ACC record, the matchup carries major implications for the Hurricanes' national championship ambitions.

Toney's absence makes the challenge considerably tougher. Miami must now find ways to maintain its offensive production against a major opponent without its leading receiver.

The Hurricanes are also pursuing their first ACC championship and hoping to make another deep run in the College Football Playoff.

Other Playmakers Must Step Up

Quarterback Darian Mensah, considered the Heisman Trophy frontrunner by BetMGM, still has several capable offensive options available.

Cooper Barkate caught four passes for 71 yards in Miami's recent 38-35 victory over North Carolina. Tight end Elija Lofton added three receptions for 48 yards, while running back Mark Fletcher Jr. scored three touchdowns.

Receiver Daylyn Upshaw is also expected to have an opportunity to contribute more as the Hurricanes adjust their offensive approach.

Before his injury, Toney expressed confidence in Miami's depth and the ability of other players to capitalize when defenses focused additional attention on him.

"We got other players that can step up and take advantage of those opportunities," Toney said.

That depth will now be tested over multiple weeks rather than in a single game.

Miami Awaits Toney's Potential Return

The possibility of Toney returning before the regular season ends offers some encouragement for Miami, but his recovery timeline remains uncertain.

For now, the Hurricanes must move forward without their leading receiver during a crucial stretch of the season. Their performance against Notre Dame will provide an early indication of how effectively the offense can adjust.

Miami remains unbeaten and ranked No. 1, but replacing Toney's production will be one of its biggest challenges as the College Football Playoff race intensifies.
